Personally I think the most important thing to do is get your trainer level up. The best way to do that is combine a lucky egg with some evolutions using saved up candies.

I personally believe the best thing to do is to wait till at least beyond level 10 before you do any evolving. After that point do what said with the lucky to gain fast exp before you use candy to evolve high CP pokemon to take over gyms and start earning coins.
